Wearing outfits with excessive beading or sparkle is not advised if you are attending a daytime or informal wedding. It will be perceived as trying to steal the spotlight, similar to wearing white, which is not cool.

Here is a list of colors that wedding guests should either avoid wearing altogether or at the very least give serious consideration to before choosing.

While it turns out that colors that were once taboo (black, for example) are now totally okay to wear to (most) weddings, there are still some colors not to wear to a wedding—including some that might surprise you.

It appears that white is still the primary color you should never wear to a wedding, so let’s settle the debate once and for all. Eighty percent of brides wear white to their weddings, so it’s crucial for a bride to stand out. The wearing of white by a guest can be interpreted as an attempt to overshadow the bride, even if that isn’t the intention.

What is inappropriate attire for a daytime wedding?

No matter how “casual” the dress code is, guests should never show up to a wedding in jeans, t-shirts, shorts, or sneakers. Dress formally as a sign of deference to the bride and groom.

It can be extremely difficult to decide what to wear to a wedding, especially as dress codes become more and more ambiguous. To avoid wardrobe gaffes, wedding guests should keep in mind a few basic fashion rules, regardless of whether their invitation specifies formal, cocktail, festive, or casual attire. Here are six things that, regardless of the dress code, you should never wear to a wedding.

The Stylish Bride’s wedding fashion stylist Julie Sabatino asserts, “You attend the wedding to honor the couple. That should be evident in the way you look. Make sure your group is appropriate for the occasion and respectful. Spend a little more time making sure you know what is appropriate and not to wear to a particular ceremony. If everyone else is wearing a cocktail dress, you don’t want to be the girl wearing a long ball gown. Consult a bridesmaid (not the bride) for clarification if you’re unsure of what “beachy chic” or “festive casual” mean.

Never outshine the bride and groom is among the most important wedding fashion rules. Avoid wearing anything that will detract from the bride, such as sequined ball gowns, sparkling tiaras, sky-high platform heels, or other items of clothing. The right time to make a daring fashion statement is not at a wedding.

Should you wear black to a daytime wedding?

Sabatino asserts that wearing black is generally acceptable because it is such a versatile color. However, unless otherwise instructed, you should refrain from wearing white.

Two professionals—a wedding planner and a bridal stylist—comment on this potentially complex subject.

It can be difficult to choose the proper wedding attire; you might, for instance, wonder if black is appropriate. The short answer is that it depends on the wedding.According to Laurie Arons of Laurie Arons Special Events, “the rules around the color have definitely softened in recent years,” adding that it’s no longer improper to wear a hue so closely associated with mourning to weddings and other joyful occasions. Today, bridesmaids are frequently seen wearing stylish black gowns of their own choosing, she observes.

We asked Arons and bridal stylist Julie Sabatino for some key factors to help you decide whether black is appropriate for the wedding you’re attending.

What should I wear to a daytime wedding?

Even though the dress code is typically casual or daytime, tank tops and jeans are not appropriate unless otherwise stated. We recommend that men wear a dress shirt, dress pants, or khakis, and that women wear a pretty sundress and wedges or sandals, with a light coat and no tie, at the very least.

Any polite wedding guest will pay close attention to the dress code and arrive dressed appropriately. Understanding the dress code is a requirement for compliance with it. We’ve got an easy-to-follow guide to the wedding guest dress codes that you’ll most frequently see on the lace-adorned invitations, ranging from black tie to casual, as well as suggestions for what to do when a dress code isn’t mentioned at all. When we are celebrating love, there is no time for stress. Here’s how to look good at your upcoming wedding.

Except if you’re going to a royal wedding, there aren’t many occasions in life where this dress code is necessary. The most formal attire, known as “white tie,” typically requires floor-length gowns for women, a black dress coat with tails and matching pants for men, as well as a white bow tie and gloves. Despite its long history, the white tie is still a relatively uncommon attire choice for contemporary weddings.

The most popular formal dress is this one. In the warmer months, men may substitute a white dinner jacket for a full tuxedo, and women may wear either elegant floor-length gowns or their most formal cocktail dresses. This is the ideal time to think about using Rent the Runway to find hundreds of dresses for rent because many of us don’t have closets full of evening gowns at our disposal. Bring out your finest jewelry, and don’t be shy about sporting a bright lip color!

Can you wear black to a wedding in the middle of the day?

In short, yes, but the key is in the styling, whether it be a black dress or an entire ensemble. It’s important to avoid appearing as though you’re dressed for a funeral, and your outfit should reflect that!

Wearing black to a wedding used to be frowned upon because it was traditionally associated with funerals and times of mourning, and we frequently receive inquiries about what constitutes appropriate and inappropriate wedding guest attire. Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to investigate: do the same rules still hold true today, and can you wear black to a wedding?

We stand by the advice we offer because it is based on years of conversations with brides, couples, and guests. Having said that, we are conscious that the majority of our experience involves relaxed Western couples and that, in some cultures, religions, and even some social circles, wearing black has a deeper connotation than it does for many of those couples and their families. Also, regardless of how well you think you know someone, you may not be able to predict their level of sensitivity to tradition in some cases. Even though our official position on wearing black to weddings is that it’s simple, elegant, and acceptable, it’s safer to forgo wearing black altogether. We therefore advise you to go for it if you are concerned and are able to find a suitable substitute for your black dress in order to completely avoid this outfit dilemma!

Short answer: yes, but the key is in the styling. Women who love to wear black and are confident in their personal style can pull off a really simple, Parisian look consisting of a black dress and simple accessories, but for the rest of us, we can add a celebratory twist to our black outfit. Here are a few quick methods to accomplish it:

Is it acceptable to wear sequins to a spring wedding?

Evening attire includes satins, smoky eyes, sequins, beaded jewelry, and higher heels.

Numerous readers have found Modern Mrs. Darcy through search engines since last month’s post, Fashion Challenge: What to Wear to a Spring Wedding,” in search of solutions to their spring wedding fashion queries.

There is no surprise. Since weddings are one of the few occasions where a dress code is still in place, the pressure is on to look good.

The majority of the frequently asked questions weren’t directly addressed in that post, but I still want to give all the ladies out there the information they need to look their best for a spring wedding.

Who should attend an afternoon wedding?

If the wedding isn’t on the beach and is scheduled for a few hours after lunch, the dress code is typically semi-formal. Cocktail dresses, LBDs, or modest party dresses are therefore required. Choose a cocktail dress or a dressy LBD if the invitation specifies formal attire.

The dress code and the dos and don’ts of an afternoon wedding guest outfit are covered in this post. Don your best attire for the occasion, and read to impress.

If the wedding isn’t on the beach and is scheduled for a few hours after lunch, the dress code is typically semi-formal. For this reason, cocktail dresses, LBDs, or modest party dresses are required. Choose a cocktail dress or a dressy LBD if the invitation requests formal attire.

The best dresses for this semi-formal event are fit-and-flare, sheath, high-low, or retro-inspired styles with hems that are just above tea length. Avoid strapless or spaghetti-strapped dresses if there will be a religious ceremony, or wear a cover-up or jacket that matches the dress instead.

Can I wear a sequined dress during the day?

This is a chance to shop your wardrobe because you can use the same sequins for daytime wear that you used for evening wear by simply styling them differently.

Like sex and swearing on television, sequins used to have a 9 o’clock watershed. They were unmistakably NSFW, but you wore them to parties and on nights when you weren’t just out but out-and-about. These kinds of rules no longer really apply because you can now wear jeans to parties and sneakers to upscale restaurants. Although I don’t think a sequined skirt is appropriate for a 16-hour desk to dinner look, it could work for a Saturday brunch or lunch if you’re willing to indulge in mimosas. (You might as well accept reality because that is definitely going to happen while wearing this skirt.)

This is a chance to shop your wardrobe because you can use the same sequins for daytime wear that you used for evening wear by simply styling them differently. I am wearing a skirt that was once a dress and has been in my possession for a very long time. I used to wear it outside with ankle-strap sandals, a denim jacket, and a straightforward, stretchy, sort of short dress with spaghetti straps. It’s been a while since I wore it that way. I’m not big on having strict rules about what’s age-appropriate, but I don’t think it’s particularly healthy to adamantly hold onto a look that represents who you were ten years ago. You and your wardrobe can grow and mature without completely transitioning to elastic waist loungewear.

Anyhow, I knew I would never wear that dress again, but as I was getting ready to start the Marie Kondo pep talk to myself, I realized this too-short dress was the ideal length for a skirt. I then took it to my wonderful dry cleaner, who cut the top few inches off (along with the label, so I’m not sure where I bought it anymore), and presto! A perfect new cocktail-length skirt that was already infused with positive energy and cost five dollars.

Do you allow patterns at weddings?

Avoid going too far. Prints and vibrant colors are acceptable, but avoid stealing the show. “There’s a difference between wearing a cocktail dress that’s really cute for the club and wearing a cocktail dress that’s meant for a wedding,” says Swann.

Nowadays, there are fewer fashion regulations for weddings than in previous decades. While this can be great, it also adds a little complexity. Many brides today are forgoing traditional gowns in favor of chic pants or jumpsuits; the occasional groom forgoes the traditional black tux in favor of a pastel suit; and even bridesmaids are forgoing cookie-cutter dresses in favor of something they can reuse repeatedly. As a result, visitors’ personal preferences have an equal amount of freedom.

In order to still be respectful of the ceremony and the people getting married, there are a few things to keep in mind as you get dressed before pulling on any outfit and calling it a day. Quite a few of the regulations are simple to understand and adhere to (e.g., “beach-formal attire”); others call for a little more outfit preparation, such as understanding what “beach-formal attire” even means (e.g., what colors to avoid).

We asked Elaine Swann, a lifestyle and etiquette expert and the founder of The Swann School of Protocol, for the lowdown on some spoken and unspoken fashion rules so you can really nail it on the big day (well, not *your* big day, but you get what I mean).

What shouldn’t you wear if you’re a wedding guest?

Avoid being too careless. Even though the wedding has a more laid-back dress code, I can assure you that it is not that relaxed. No sweatpants, jeans, or T-shirts, as you can see. Swann asserts that being overdressed is always preferable to being underdressed in this situation.

Nowadays, there are fewer fashion regulations for weddings than in previous decades. While this can be great, it also adds a little complexity. Today’s brides frequently forego traditional gowns in favor of chic pants or jumpsuits; the occasional groom opts for a pastel suit instead of the traditional black tux; and even bridesmaids are eschewing traditional dresses in favor of more versatile options. This implies that guests’ personal preferences are also free to choose.

There are a few things to keep in mind as you get dressed, however, in order to still be respectful of the ceremony and the people getting married. When can you wear sequins?

An understated sequin sweater or top gives an ordinary piece a little extra oomph! Sequins can be worn anytime, day or night!

It was once again extremely hot in Dallas (not quite 100 degrees, but close), making outdoor activities less enjoyable. Good morning, ladies! I hope you all had a good weekend. On Saturday, we attended our granddaughter’s soccer game in the middle of the day, and I left my grandson’s football game immediately after because it was too hot. September’s heat makes me feel exhausted. On Saturday night, we attended the 80th birthday celebration for the mother of my sister-in-law. It was so adorable, and I loved that I was the youngest person there.

Today, I wanted to share with you one of my favorite fall looks, featuring this amazing sequin lightweight sweater (these photos were taken in Los Angeles a few weeks ago). I’m not saying to go completely overboard like this (during the day), but understated is always a good policy. Sequins can be worn at any time, day or night, and an understated sequin sweater or top gives an average piece a little oomph. I selected these brown denim pants to go with the sweater. I have already worn all three of these pieces several times (as shown) and mixed them with other items in my closet. It’s such a nice change from blue and my new sandals, which were a splurge, but the color got me.

I also purchased this sequined top to pair with higher-rise jeans while shopping in Los Angeles. Given that my high-waisted jeans completely cover my stomach, I have a waist that is about my length. I’m drawn to the autumnal colors of browns and spices because I adore them. I’m not sure I can support the pastel color trend for this fall. Additionally, I recently attended a fall fashion show at Neiman Marcus and was astonished by the sheer number of designers.
